Dalwolsie (Room 16)
Dalwolsie is the ancient French term for 'a meander in the river' which is a feature of the South Esk River lying in the woodlands, immediately adjacent to the Castle. The name evolved into Dalwolsey, and subsequently became Dalhousie!
Decorated and furnished in a French medieval style with a early 19th century antique double bed the new Dalwolsie is sumptuously adorned with shades of russet, gold and sienna, and features a bare sand stone wall and a tower alcove with window seat.
King James (Room 18)
The Laird of Dalhousie in the time of James VI (of Scotland) seems to have been a favorite of the monarch, and his brother John Ramsay saved the life of James VI by killing Earl of Gowrie, who was plotting to kidnap the monarch. In 1600 John Ramsay was made the King's Page, and a Peerage was conferred on the Laird. There are traditions in the countryside of Royal visits to the Castle in these reigns, in which a cloth of gold was laid down for the King to step upon from the Castle to the Bridge. Although in respect of the cloth of gold we fancy tradition has been immoderately liberal!
India (Room 19)
James, first and only Marquise of Dalhousie, became the youngest ever Governor General of India at the age of 33. The India room celebrates his magnificent contribution in the development of the Indian Empire.
A large L-shaped room overlooking the River South Esk and facing south across open parkland and forests. The rich, luxurious, Renaldie decor fully justifies the noble place this King represents in Scottish history. A dramatically canopied King Size Bed dominates the room, with striking tones of blue and burgundy combined with natural stone, whilst the furnishings relate back to Medieval times. The en-suite Bathroom also reflects this period with its specially designed tiles and antique style fittings.

The historical connection dates back to when the then Laird of Dalwolsie (Dalhousie) joined Mary, Queen of Scots to fight the English, under her banner at the Battle of Langside. During the renovations a 16th century “shot-hole” was discovered in the defensive tower, which has now been restored to its original stone face.
